By India Today Web Desk: A Rio de Janeiro court on Sunday sentenced former Brazilian congresswoman, Flordelis dos Santos, who has also been a celebrity gospel singer, to 50 years in prison for killing her husband.
The court held that Flordelis (61) had made at least six failed attempts to poison Anderson do Carmo (42) with cyanide before orchestrating his murder. Anderson was shot in June 2019 outside his house in Rio de Janerio.
Prosecutors charged Dos Santos in August 2020 with “orchestrating the homicide, enlisting (several of her grown children) to take part in the crime and attempting to disguise it as an armed robbery,” AFP reported.
Flordelis and Anderson were considered a power couple in Brazil’s burgeoning Evangelical Christian movement – having a huge family with 55 children, most of them adopted.
Simone dos Santos Rodrigues, a biological daughter of the former congresswoman, was also sentenced on Sunday to 31 years in prison, while other children were acquitted in the case.
Flordelis ordered the killing “because the victim kept strict control of the family finances and administered conflicts rigidly”, and refused to give preferential treatment to the ex-lawmaker’s closest [friends] in detriment to other members of the family, the court was quoted as stating by the Guardian.
Five of the couple’s other children and a granddaughter were also accused in the trial.
