Interpol 90th General Assembly Delhi

Interpol diesn’t recognise Taiwan as a separate country, its general secretary Jurgen Stock

By Munish Chandra Pandey: China is obstructing Taiwan’s participation in Interpol, its foreign ministry has alleged. This comes after Interpol said that they can’t allow Taiwan’s participation as they have been recognising it to be a part of China for the last 28 years.

Interpol recognises Taiwan as the People’s Republic of China and not as a separate country, its general secretary Jurgen Stock said at a press conference during the 90th General Assembly. Interpol has also refused to grant observer status to Taiwan, he said.

“In 1984, the Interpol General Assembly recognised the People’s Republic of China as the sole representation of China. As such, Interpol recognises Taiwan is part of China and as China is a member of Interpol, Interpol cannot grant Taiwan observer status in the General Assembly,” Stock said.

Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry expressed dissatisfaction over the development. “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses its deep regret and solemn dissatisfaction with Interpol’s political considerations overriding the police profession, ignoring Taiwan’s actual needs to participate in Interpol’s work and the country’s pragmatic demands for meaningful participation in Interpol,” the ministry said.

“Taiwan is a sovereign and independent country. Democratic Taiwan and authoritarian China are not subordinate to each other. Taiwan is by no means part of the People’s Republic of China, and China has no right to represent Taiwan in the international arena,” it said.

“Taiwan’s police system has always been independent of China, complete and effective. As an important member of the international police community, it has a high willingness and excellent ability to contribute to the international joint fight against transnational crimes. But because of China’s arrogance and obstruction, it is unable to establish direct and real-time intelligence exchange with Interpol, affecting the country’s substantial participation in global police and security cooperation in fighting crime,” the statement of Taiwan’s foreign ministry added.

China, on the other hand, is an executive committee member of Interpol.

The Interpol’s 90th General Assembly is underway in New Delhi. Interpol, or International Criminal Police Organization, is a global body with 195 countries as members. Taiwan has, on multiple occasions, requested Interpol to include it in the organisation. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Interpol’s General Assembly.
