The three-time former Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, is to lead his party in the upcoming general polls in the country

By India Today Web Desk: Almost eight months after the change in the Pakistan government, the former Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, is likely to return to the country, ending his self-exile in London since 2019.

The buzz of the 72-year-old leader’s return to the country grew louder after the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) (PML-N) party-led Pakistan government purportedly allowed a diplomatic passport to the leader.

A PML-N party insider, privy to the matter, has expressed confidence that Sharif will finally return in December but said the long-anticipated homecoming will not signal the government’s intentions to concede on the issue of early elections as demanded by Imran Khan, the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, reported PTI.

The three-time former prime minister is to lead his party in the upcoming general polls in the country, according to media reports.

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan has been demanding fresh elections before the term of the current National Assembly ends in August 2023.

Imran Khan was ousted from his position in April this year after a no-confidence motion was passed against him.

Several corruption cases had been launched by the government of ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan against the 72-year-old supremo of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz since his ouster from office by the Supreme Court in July 2017 in the Panama Papers case.
