By India Today Web Desk: Pakistan is reeling under dire financial straits and increasing unemployment is only compounding problems for the nation. Now, a new picture has emerged on social media which shows thousands of candidates sitting on a stadium ground to appear for a written test for recruitment to the constable’s post in Islamabad Police.

According to Islamabad police, more than 30,000 male and female candidates from all over Pakistan took the written examination for the 1,667 vacancies that were advertised for the police constable recruitment process. The police constable’s posts have been lying vacant for the last five years.

The huge turnout in Islamabad Police Recruitment has sparked a new debate on the issue of increasing employment in the country. Unemployment in Pakistan has reached its peak. Due to negligible recruitment in government jobs, the number of unemployed is also continuously increasing. Despite this, lakhs of aspirants are trying their luck for the posts lying vacant in the government sector.

According to a report released by the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE) in 2022, over 31% of the country’s youth is currently unemployed. Out of this, 51% are females while 16% are males, with many of them having professional degrees. Nearly 60% of Pakistan’s population is less than 30-years-old, while the current unemployment rate is 6.9%.

PAKISTAN’S ECONOMIC CONDITION

The economic condition of Pakistan is such that the treasury of the country is running dry and the nation is also grappling with shortage of cooking gas and daily essentials.

What has made matters worse for Pakistan is the political instability that rocked the nation after former Prime Minister Imran Khan was ousted last year. The floods further compounded the problems, affecting one-third of the millions of people living in Pakistan.

Pakistan had to turn to the global stage for financial assistance, after which many countries came forward to help. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) came to the rescue of the nation but with a condition.

According to Pakistani news channel, ARY, the IMF is not satisfied with the performance of Pakistan’s Finance Ministry and Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). It has disbursed a loan of 1.2 billion dollars to Pakistan, taking the total loan disbursed by the institution to 7 billion dollars till date.

According to the news agency Reuters, the IMF has advised Pakistan to reduce its expenditure before the ninth review of the loan that was disbursed to the nation to pull itself out of financial straits.
