By India Today Web Desk: Indian-origin Rishi Sunak is the first United Kingdom prime minister of colour and the first Hindu prime minister to enter 10, Downing Street. The 42-year-old Conservative Party leader has publicly admitted to his religious faith while stating that he was a citizen of Britain but his ‘cultural’ heritage was Indian. Slamming alleged racial comments, The Daily Show’s host Trevor Noah was quick to put people who are offended by Sunak’s appointment in place.

During his satirical televised programme, Noah questioned the UK PM’s critics. He asked, “What is wrong with you?”

Sunak’s appointment attracted the opinions of many, sometimes unsolicited, mostly encouraging but other times racial too. While Sunak’s supporters say that the UK is a step closer to a more multicultural society, critics say that they have failed to connect with their leader, already.

Noah noted during the episode that Sunak was ‘Indian and a Hindu’ and that he was one of the better-looking UK prime ministers too. Comparing the Indian-origin PM to former UK PM Boris Johnson, Noah said that Sunak was a ‘snack’.

“Now, of course, of course, not everyone in the UK is happy about Rishi Sunak taking the top spot and making history. And it is not because of his policies or because of his personality. No, there are some people who have a problem with something else,” The Daily Show host said.

He played a clip from the British Radio Show during the episode and played a voice recording of a caller to the radio jockey (RJ). With no mention of his reasons, the caller on the radio criticised Sunak’s appointment and implied that the UK PM ought to be ‘white’.

Upon being asked by the RJ on the British Radio Show if the ‘real problem was that Rishi Sunak was a Brown man and if people didn’t trust him’, the caller said, “85% of English people, yes, are white English people. And they want to see a prime minister that reflects them.”

The radio caller said, “Could you imagine him going to the Scottish Nationalists and being prime minister of the Scottish Nationalists? Could you imagine me becoming the Prime Minister of Pakistan or…or Saudi Arabia? No! These things matter. I’m sorry that you do not like it, but this is predominantly, we are talking about England. 85% of English people, yes, are white English people. And they want to see a prime minister that reflects them.”

Snubbing the notion, Noah, in an explicit jibe at erstwhile British colonies, said, “Yeah, this (the caller on the radio show) guy has a good point. Can you imagine if white English people wanted to rule countries where no one looked like them? Oh, that would never happen. What would that world be like?

“Now, you know what is funny for me. It is funny how racists always say, oh, colonisation was fine. It was business until they feel like they were colonised. Not even being colonised, the guy (Sunak) is British. What’s wrong with you?” Noah said.

Hitting out at the British colonies, Noah said that Sunak’s critics should be elated with his appointment as the United Kingdom can now rightfully blame a brown man for their mistakes.

“And if you ask me, British racists are looking at this whole thing wrong. This could be a good thing for you people. After 400 years, you’ll finally get to legitimately blame a brown person for your country’s problem. You are living your dreams!” he said.

In an apparent jibe at the UK’s decision on Brexit, he said that the aim of withdrawal of the UK from the European Union was to maintain a ‘white’ England. But look how that turned out to be, the host indicated.

“It (Brexit) led directly to the Indian Prime Minister. What are you scared of? Does he (the caller on the radio show) think Sunak is going to walk up to the podium on his first day at the office and be like, ‘it is the greatest privilege of my life to be able to give back to the country I owe so much to? And to show my gratitude, I want to say, I am selling the entire country to India! Revenge time. This was the plan the whole time. Happy Diwali!!” the South-African host said while snubbing a racial take on Sunak.
