By India Today Web Desk: As ballot counts continued across the United States on Wednesday, the question of who will control Congress remained undetermined. As opposed to a clean sweep that many had expected and Republicans had predicted, Democrats have shown remarkable resilience and performed surprisingly well in the midterm elections.

Republicans had been heavily favoured to take control of the House of Representatives against the backdrop of skyrocketing inflation as well as low approval ratings for President Joe Biden. However, the mixed results so far, one clearly underlining that the voters are in fact not showing a clear rejection of President Biden and his party, have defied expectations.

HERE ARE THE KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • Many Democrats are strongly outperforming expectations. The party received a big win in Pennsylvania on Wednesday as Democrat John Fetterman won an open Senate seat currently held by the GOP. Fetterman won over Republican Mehmet Oz to increase Democrat’s chances of retaining control of Congress.

Democrats also held a crucial Senate seat in New Hampshire, where incumbent Maggie Hassan defeated Republican Don Bolduc.

  • The thin-margin race saw Democrats win governors’ races in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania, while the Republicans held on to governors’ seats in Florida, Texas and Georgia.

  • After Fetterman’s win in Pennsylvania, all eyes were on the hotly-contested Senate seats in Nevada, Georgia, Wisconsin, and Arizona. Thousands of ballots remain uncounted in those races, and it is too early to determine winners.

  • US Congress comprises the Senate and the House of Representatives. Presently, Democrats are in control of both the Houses of Congress. But the Republicans need to pick up five seats to take a majority in the House and just one to control the Senate.

  • The outcome of races for House and Senate will determine the future of Joe Biden’s agenda. Republican control of the House would likely trigger a spate of investigations into Biden and his family, while a GOP Senate takeover would hobble the president’s ability to make judicial appointments.
