By India Today Web Desk: Climate activists have made a splash again and this time the landmark buildings in London were their target. The Home Office, the MI5 building, the Bank of England, and the headquarters of News Corp at London Bridge were spray-painted by climate activists to protest against fossil fuels.

On Monday, six ‘Just Stop Oil’ supporters sprayed orange paint on the four buildings, which they dubbed as “four pillars of fossil fuel economy”. A video shared by the environmental activists group showed the supporters spraying orange paint from a fire extinguisher.

The group is demanding the UK government to halt all new oil and gas consents and licenses. For their protest, they chose the four key buildings, claiming that they “were chosen to represent the four pillars that support and maintain the power of the fossil fuel economy — government, security, finance and media.”

“We are not prepared to stand by and watch while everything we love is destroyed, while vulnerable people go hungry and fossil fuel companies and the rich profit from our misery. The era of fossil fuels should be long gone, but the creeping tentacles of fossil fuel interests continue to corrupt our politics, government and media as they have for decades,” a Just Stop Oil spokesperson said.

The spokesperson questioned, “How else do you explain a government ignoring sensible no-brainer policies like renewables, insulation and public transport, which would cut our energy bills and our carbon emissions, in favour of corrupt schemes to drill for uneconomic oil and gas at taxpayers’ expense?”

The group claimed that they are acting to stop oil and gas as it was the “right thing to do”.

“Well, we’re done with begging. We are acting to stop new oil and gas because it is the right thing to do. As humans, we have every right to protect ourselves and those we love. The Government has the power to end the disruption today by agreeing to stop new oil and gas,” the Just Stop Oil spokesperson said.

The climate activists have been targeting landmarks and artworks as they continue to protest against fossil fuel. Earlier this month, supporters of Just Stop Oil had thrown tomato soup at Vincent Van Gogh’s masterpiece ‘Sunflowers’ at the National Gallery in London. The two protesters had then glued themselves to the museum’s wall.

Van Gogh’s painting was unharmed but there was some minor damage to the frame.
