By India Today Web Desk: Barcelona manager Xavi has said he would understand if he’s sacked as his club goes through a rough patch of form. Xavi’s comments came after Barcelona suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of rivals Real Madrid in La Liga.

Speaking ahead of their match against Villarreal in the league, Xavi said the fans have been supportive of him but if the team continues to lose, he would understand the consequences.

“People on the street raise their fists at me as a sign of encouragement. Now we have to continue and face reality, but I’m always positive. With the effort made by the club & the squad we have, we have to compete for trophies. And if we don’t win, as the president [Joan Laporta] said, there will be consequences, starting with me. If we don’t win, another coach will come in. But I am going to give everything so that this works,” said Xavi.

The former Barcelona midfielder said he has built a team to achieve success and win titles.

“I think we’ve made a team to achieve success and win titles. I believe that and I am being honest about it. Here I am taking full responsibility and with the highest hopes. Hopes are still as high despite the criticism this week,” Xavi added.

The 2010 World Cup winner went on to congratulate Alexia Putellas, Gavi and Robert Lewandowski for their awards at the Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris.

“I want to congratulate Gavi, Alexia Putellas and Robert Lewandowski for the fantastic awards they’ve won. This means that Barca is here, still alive despite not having extraordinary results. We are here and more alive than ever. It is moving to see players winning individual awards. Let’s see if we can now win collective ones as well,” said Xavi.

Xavi’s Barcelona will now face Villarreal in La Liga next, as they look to get back to winning ways. They will then play Athletic Bilbao before a crucial UEFA Champions League clash against Bayern Munich on October 27.
